ABSTRACT: This article analyzes labor as a fundamental instrument for the resettlement of former detainees, focusing on the particularities of the prison system in Natal/RN. The research starts from the central problem of to what extent prison labor activity can be considered an effective vector of social reintegration in the face of structural difficulties and social stigma. The general objective is to examine the role of labor in the resocialization process, confronting the guidelines of the Legal Execution Law with the practical reality of the prison units in Natal. Methodologically, the study is classified as a legal-dogmatic and qualitative research, based on a bibliographic and documentary survey, supported by the doctrines of Bitencourt (2023) and Mirabete (2014) regarding the legal nature and purposes of punishment, as well as the studies of Nelson, Sousa, and Medeiros (2022) on the productive capacity and business modeling in the prison system of Rio Grande do Norte. The results discussed indicate that, although work is the pillar for the dignity of the convict, its effectiveness in Natal is limited by the low specialization of workshops and the absence of external support networks. It is concluded that full resocialization depends on overcoming social prejudice and the implementation of integrated public policies that guarantee the former detainee a real opportunity for a new beginning, highlighting the relevance of the study for public security and social justice.
