INCARCERATED WOMEN IN BRAZIL
RESUMO
O encarceramento feminino no Brasil tem crescido de forma acelerada nas últimas décadas, revelando a seletividade penal e a reprodução de desigualdades estruturais que atravessam as trajetórias de mulheres pobres, negras e socialmente vulnerabilizadas. A literatura aponta que essas mulheres vivenciam o cárcere de maneira singular, marcada por necessidades específicas relacionadas à saúde, maternidade e vínculos familiares, frequentemente negligenciadas pelo sistema prisional. Além disso, fatores como violência de gênero, baixa escolaridade, precarização laboral e envolvimento periférico com o tráfico de drogas configuram elementos centrais que antecedem e influenciam o aprisionamento feminino. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar criticamente o encarceramento de mulheres no Brasil, examinando sua historicidade, as vulnerabilidades sociais que moldam suas trajetórias, as condições de vida e de saúde no cárcere, a aplicação dos direitos humanos e das políticas públicas específicas, bem como os desafios enfrentados na reintegração social pós-pena. A análise demonstra que o sistema penal atua de forma discriminatória, reforçando desigualdades de gênero e raça e comprometendo a dignidade humana das mulheres privadas de liberdade. Os resultados evidenciam a urgência de políticas públicas intersetoriais, baseadas na perspectiva de gênero e nos direitos humanos, capazes de promover cuidado, proteção e reinserção social efetiva.

ABSTRACT
Female incarceration in Brazil has increased significantly in recent decades, revealing the penal selectivity and structural inequalities that shape the trajectories of poor, Black, and socially vulnerable women. The literature indicates that women experience imprisonment in a unique way, marked by specific needs related to health, motherhood, and family bonds, which are frequently neglected within the prison system. Moreover, factors such as gender-based violence, low educational attainment, precarious employment, and peripheral involvement in drug trafficking constitute central elements that precede and influence female incarceration. This study aims to critically analyze the imprisonment of women in Brazil by examining its historical development, the social vulnerabilities that shape their trajectories, the living and health conditions within prisons, the application of human rights and gender-sensitive policies, and the challenges faced during social reintegration after release. The analysis demonstrates that the penal system operates in a discriminatory manner, reinforcing gender and racial inequalities and compromising the human dignity of women deprived of liberty. The findings highlight the urgent need for intersectoral public policies grounded in gender perspectives and human rights, capable of promoting care, protection, and effective social reintegration.
