ABSTRACT
Introduction: The pursuit of sustainable and efficient innovation has become alarming in recent years within architecture and civil construction. The drywall system has emerged as a major alternative to masonry for acoustic sealing, given its provision of speed, lightness, and dry execution, as well as its low environmental impact. In Brazil, the application of drywall is regulated by ABNT through NBR 15758 and its parts 1, 2, and 3, as well as NBR 15575:2021, which are responsible for defining parameters of structural, acoustic, and thermal performance. Objective: To conduct a bibliographic analysis in order to critically deepen studies on the use and differentiation of drywall in parallel with traditional masonry, aiming to demonstrate its limitations and potential within the context of contemporary architecture. Method: This research is qualitative, based on ten reviewed national bibliographies, all published between 2020 and 2025. These were organized into four strands: structural performance, thermoacoustic performance, sustainability, and technological innovation, all guided by the criteria and guidelines of Brazilian technical standards. Results: After research and comparisons, it is evident that drywall technology offers significant advantages in construction speed, design flexibility, satisfactory waste reduction, and thermal and acoustic comfort. Conclusion: The complete replacement of masonry is not the symbol of architectural innovation, but rather the choice of systems according to their context of application, taking into account environmental, cultural, and technical issues. In this way, efficient and sustainable buildings are promoted
